On Thursday, October 6, 2011, St. John's Sparta hosted a community forum organized by a coalition of government agencies, non-profits and hospitals on heroin/Prescription Drug Awareness. Heroin use and prescription drug abuse has become a serious problem in the area with a related rise in crime. The parish hall was filled to capacity for the event in which four judges (one retired), the District Attorney, two doctors specializing in addiction, the Sparta Police Commander and Police Chaplain, a recovering user, and an addiction counselor provided excellent information to those in attendance. This was the best attended such event to date. The organizing committee hopes to schedules similar forums in other parts of Monroe County.
Congratulations to Kathy Charles and all the other folks at St. Mary's, Tomah!

Christ Church Cathedral's new Dean begins on Sunday, November 6th
Father Greene is a native of the Diocese of Chicago, where his father also served as an Episcopal Priest for 43 years. He grew up in the small rural parish that his father served for most of his childhood before moving back to the city to pursue his education. He participated in several diocesan programs for youth and young adults, which is where he met his wife, Hope, an artist and photographer. The two moved to Philadelphia where Fr. Greene worked at the University of Pennsylvania as departmental registrar, and graduated magna cum laude in mathematics. While in Philadelphia, he led Episcopal campus ministry for Penn and Drexel students. He and Hope then moved to the United Kingdom, where he trained for the priesthood at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield. The college at Mirfield is the last in the Anglican Communion to be run by a monastery, and students participate in the daily round of monastic life; notable alumni include Rowan Williams and Desmond Tutu. At Mirfield, Fr. Greene was the first ever American student body president, and earned two degrees in Theology and Pastoral Studies with distinction. While in England, Fr. Greene worked with Saint Aidan’s Church in Leeds, and with Durham Cathedral, where he was a pastoral assistant. Returning to the States, he took up a curacy in Galesburg IL, before receiving a call to serve as Rector of St. Luke’s Church in Dixon. Fr. Greene is continuing his theological education at Durham University, where he researching the theological implications of modern physics, and is a PhD candidate. He and his wife have two children, Aidan, 4 and Miriam, 1.
