Dear Kent,

Fun Camp 2011 was the best ever. We had a great team who worked hard to teach math, reading, and art to 130 children from the Hagely Gap area.

The Women's Group received another boost, this time from a Jamaican company.

We are starting our Fall Fundraising Appeal. Read how you can help.

Sincerely,
Cathy Skoula, Executive Director

The Benefits of Change: Fun Camp 2011 Report

A number of positive changes helped to make this year's Fun Camp the best yet. One hundred thirty Fun Campers enjoyed innovative and fun math, reading, art and physical education sessions created by Camp Leader Tessa Anderson, 15 volunteer Counselors and several Assistant Counselors.

For the first time, a Jamaican was chosen as our Fun Camp Leader. Tessa, who has worked with Blue Mountain Project in a number of capacities (many of you may remember his Patois classes during your Service Learning volunteer trips), is a teacher at Minto Primary School and is attending university in Kingston to further his teaching skills. We were also fortunate to be able to hold the Fun Camps at Minto and Penlyne Castle Primary Schools, giving us access to separate and furnished classrooms, kitchen facilities, a closed played yard, and maybe most importantly - decent bathroom space.

Unexpectedly, a small group of eighth graders slipped into this year's Fun Camp, usually set up only for first through rising seventh graders. They were so eager to learn that our Fun Camp Counselors allowed them to stay and arranged special math sessions for them, teaching them trigonometry while the rest of the Fun Campers learned basic math. Another group of stowaways was also discovered. These children were a little young but were also so eager to be at Fun Camp that some of the Counselors set up a special classroom for them. Their special project was reading and their achievement was learning how to write their names. With an adaptive and innovate team, both planned and unexpected changes helped significantly increase the benefits of this year's Fun Camp.

Saving the Environment and Making Money

One Plastic Bag at a Time

Kadian Edwards, a charter member of the Women's Group, recently noted that it is harder and harder to find plastic bags thrown away on the sides of the roads in Hagley Gap. Everyone is jumping on the band wagon to reduce unsightly pollution and help the women make a little money at the same time. The Women's Group uses plastic bags to make fashion handbags, knapsacks, carry bags, etc.

And the environmental spirit just keeps spreading! Christine Stiebel, a longtime supporter of the Blue Mountain Project, convinced the employees of Pan Caribbean to collect used plastic grocery bags. Every person who collected 100 plastic bags received a reusable grocery bag. Over 4,400 bags were collected and then presented to the Women's Group in July. The contribution of 4,400 bags was happily welcomed and appreciated and will soon be turned into some beautiful purses and beach bags.

Annual Fund Raising Appeal Coming to a Mailbox Near You

Twice a year you have an especially simple opportunity to monetarily support the Blue Mountain Project: the Annual Report Appeal and the Fall Appeal. Your generous donations pay for the l.i.g.h.t.s' and Ambassadors' stipends and the clinic electric bills. It is your assistance that enables us to offer accessible quality medical and educational services to the people of Hagley Gap.

This year you have the opportunity to go above and beyond with your generous contribution. Your response to this year's Fall Appeal will help us begin construction on the much needed clean water pipeline. Keep your eyes peeled for the Fall Appeal in your mail or email boxes and quickly send in your check or hit the Donate Now button!

Thank you for your continued interest in the Blue Mountain Project and the people of Hagley Gap.

Cathy Skoula, Executive Director
